The image he had created was of her physical and spiritual likeness, yet it was both more than her and less: it was the essence of the woman, what he saw and treasured in her, what he had always hoped that she could see in herself but seemed ever struggling against. His own longings and aspirations were there too: it was her, through him.

He would talk of the ancient philosophers' views of Man, of Man's nature and his place in the universe. Some evenings, he would be studying the modello without saying anything at all and, closing his eyes, his hands would begin to move through the air, shaping, carving, shifting the masses, extending the lines, tightening the forms, refining the features, adjusting the pose.

A man with god-like qualities the noble visage, the air of authority, how he stands just so .. a man, or perhaps a god who had yet to become known, had yet to introduce himself. And yet, it is a man. There was an altar in Athens dedicated to Agnostos Theos ... the unknown god.
