Unbelievably powerful, brilliantly written. A series of memories and reflections that is, I think, as good a anything I've ever read.

That is a powerful endorsement!!!!! I read, The house of Sand and Fog and loved it, though it was hard to read. And started, Townie, but couldn’t finish it. Townie was such an accurate portrayal of the way I grew up, it brought back painful memories. This author pulls all the stops. I am going to get a sample of this one, test the waters before I jump in. For me, this author’s ability to evoke feelings can be overwhelming.

It’s a collection of personal anecdotes that tell of mainly hard times, sad times and challenges. But there are also recollections of loved ones and happy times too. I’m having to read it in sections because I do find it emotionally draining. I read a couple of his essays and then I seem to stop and think about them and wonder if I can face another or if I should wait a while before I continue.
But the writing is superb - it feels honest and it feels true. It really is the most thought provoking book I’ve read in a very long time.
