Maybe try The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley the story is about a 11 year old girl whom solves mysteries and is a master poisoner!

Try Cleo Coyle - Coffeehouse Mystery Series, it's a cozy mystery and western author Zane Grey. My mom likes to read and sounds just like your Nan. These are two of her favorite authors.
