"These mountains (Sierra Madre) encompass hundreds of square miles and are so rugged that a wildcat can hardly get around there. They're straight up and down, full of deer and bear, contain small rivers, huge trees, big rock slides, caves and prehistoric dwellings. No people live in these parts, unless you call those bloody band of wild Apaches people."

We can see all the way over to Colorado, New Mexico, and even get a glimpse of the blue mountains of Mexico. What a country the Apaches ruled over in their day.

It is a common rule that when one of them starts to talk, even the youngest one, the others are silent and focus their attention on the one who is speaking, interjecting encouraging sounds every now and again. Everybody gets to have their say, and their words are respected.

The Apache, like the Indians in Northern Canada, they discarded the meat and went after the liver, kidneys, stomach, and intestines. It was all grilled over coals and without any salt. When the meal was finished, we sat around the fire, lit our pipes and cigarettes, and relaxed and enjoyed life.

The Northern Canadian Indian Chief Manitoba once said to the famous researcher Samuel Hearne, who in the 1700s traveled from the Hudson Bay to the Northwest Passage
and on his first unsuccessful attempt didn't take any Indian women along to assist: "Without women, one could not survive in this land”.
