He was something else, huh? Lived fast and died young. I got two more books by Cheyney in the Pulp Box—"Sorry You've Been Troubled" and "Try Anything Twice"—so if this one pans out, I'll have some fun ahead. My only quibbles with this book so far are the almost Tolkien-esque descriptions of everyone's costumes and the occasional scene where a character tells another one what just happened—in paragraphs of dialogue. I keep thinking, "Did you think I forgot the last six pages? Just write 'He told her what happened.' " Maybe it's a British thing.

That’s right. The British must always tell each other everything that has happened to them in full each time they meet. It’s how their empire fell.
