Six chapters in and it still hasn't been explained why murder is just a normal everyday occurrence. Updated theory: everyone is actually in a neverending Squid Game and the only way out is death.

New Theory: all the dead students are sacrifices to the dragon overlords so they don't kill all of humanity.

Finished the first two chapters, and have decided that the rules of this society make zero sense and everyone is a psychopath.
