It is nice to see Aptheker and Oates' estimates for reprisal deaths in the aftermath of the revolt to be overestimations—from Aptheker's 200 Breen provides a much more supported 30-40 range. Obviously nothing can make such a grisly scene of murder in the service of the slave system against liberation "nice," it is an astounding fact that the number massacred was not higher.

Very wonderful so far. I had some knowledge of the rebellion, and read Styron's novel in elementary school (though I did not understand the controversy addressed at the beginning of the work). Breen does well in providing a dialectical view of the Aptheker-Foner resistance school vs the Phillips-Genovese school, though I think his work undermines Phillips and especially Genovese (who should've known better) far more.
