This sounds like a very interesting book but it begs the question, Why Syria? Why not Rwuanda? or Palestine? or the North of Ireland? Why not the American South previous to the Civil Rights Era? or now in the states that practice the death penalty so enthusiastically? Sorry, I think I have become too much a cynic.

There are fine books on other countries too, I am sure. One diplomatic disaster doesn't deserve less attention that the other...
