you must enjoy both the atmosphere/vibe (creepy, gothic) and the story to fully enjoy this book. Both are equally necessary to it. And if one is not your cup of tea, then you will not enjoy the book.

If you don't enjoy creepy/gothic you will not like it even with the story. Same goes for the reverse, if the story doesn't pull you in the atmosphere won't hold you. They are co-dependent.
