The prose is beautiful — Kingsolver is a master at it — but I couldn’t help but think that Demon’s voice was really inauthentic. It was written by a 60-something woman, and it reads that way. The topics of addiction, abuse and poverty are important topics to discuss, but I would much rather read about these topics from the people who have experienced them, not from an outsider who is not emotionally invested.

I really am looking forward to reading this book. She was on Armchair Expert podcast and definitely got the feeling she was invested. But I will see when I get there. I am reading The Poisonwood Bible now...

I’m probably being too harsh, but that’s how it felt to me. Like a lack of compassion for the characters. I also haven’t read David Copperfield, which it is supposed to be based on. That might’ve added some nuance. Enjoy Poisonwood Bible, it (unlike DC) is a richly woven tapestry that I could sink right into & believe it was real. Magical stuff. Kingsolver is immensely talented but DC ain’t it IMO.
