So I am to buy that this is a society in which they use ink pots and quills and also say “for the win?” I don’t. I don’t buy this.

I also have the same issue with this book as I do with Red Rising: the basic premise that to get to the best of the best in your elite military ranks, you have your cadets kill each other? Fight to the death?? Rather than putting your SECOND BEST in the INFANTRY or something, your cause is better served by them being DEAD??? FOR WHY????

Let’s make some predictions, shall we? Xaden is obviously a love interest and does not murder our main girl, Vi. We know this because he’s mYsTeRiOuS aNd BrOoDiNg (and has dark hair). We are also going to get some kind of Ender’s Game twist in this series where the enemy is not evil and everyone fighting for the cause has been lied to! Also, this is bad so far.
