I open the front cover, and just inside is a scrawl of ancient ink. “A signedfirst edition?” my words drip with disbelief. I can’t imagine how Dad managed to find this, or how much he spent on it.
Dad almost looks embarrassed. “You seem to really enjoy that particular book, so I thought you’d like it.”

I know who he is, but we’ve never talked before.
My eyes flick across the room, land on him for a moment only. Dark hair cut short, average height, stupid glasses with sort of blocky, square-ish frames. Ones that make it seem like he’s trying to look like a hipster or a nerd. Except he doesn’t dress the rest of either part.
