As the world building goes on for the set of characters from Tucson, as well as for the set of characters of the Apache, forces that will bring them into conflict are building also. The reader feels how unfortunate this is because reading about both groups living their Iives without the cruelty of open warfare is refreshing and fascinating. But this was Arizona in 1871. A different world from ours.

The men who raided and slaughtered Apache near Camp Grant (some 100 of them) are placed on trial for murder. This shocks and infuriates the citizens of Tucson who see Apache as the murderers and those who fight them as heroes.

It’s strange when you do not want a story to progress. You are happy with the Apache at peace and the Anglos and Mexicans at peace. Let it remain that way. Let the story stop. Because if it goes forward there is violent death. And now it is going forward.
