There are so many wounds a soldier carries-the worst are the ones you can't see. I am forever the optimist and hope his demons are at rest, or at least at bay.

The solution is simple: if we send our soldiers to do our bidding, then it is our responsibility to take care of them. That is what soldiers want; they do not want to be discarded like an empty casing and left on the battlefield to disappear into dust.

The day was cool but the sun felt warm. The streets were busy, and people moved with purpose and with a spring in their step, as if ready to sprint at the sound of an explosion or the crack of the sniper's bullet. 'Lets make the best of the situation' seemed to be a Sarajevo trait. 'You never know when you'll be scurrying like a rat into its hole'.

So Bosnia languished in the hands of madmen because Big Brother felt that region was not a priority. A quarter of a million people would die before the collective consciousness of the world turned towards Bosnia.

In the zoo that was Sarajevo, silence was cherished as well as feared. We knew it would end in some terrifying way for someone. Usually the end came with a crash, boom or bang caused by a weapon of war. No comfort or relaxation, just the knowledge that they were still out there, poking holes in our silence.

You could not avoid death in Sarajevo. The city was like a giant terminal ward in a hospital called Bosnia.

It seemed that the darkness made sounds louder, and as a result people always talked in whispers.

In Sarajevo I learned many things I didn't want to know. I was amazed at how much blood there is in the human body, for example.

The city was black. As we made the short drive, I noticed the faint glow of candles, well screened from view because light drew bullets. Every now and then I could see and hear the soon-to-be familiar tracer bullets criss-crossing through the night sky
