I felt a new quality of anguish. Maybe parents feel for every child. Maybe we feel more than we ever knew possible. As I look at my three children, in the diffused gold light that shines unsteadily through the poplar leaves, I feel overfull with the knowledge that for this moment they are safe and happy, which is ultimately all we parents want.
