There's an almost gothic sensibility about this one. Although usually it's the woman fighting a sense of foreboding...

I know it's all very romantic, but can we acknowledge that neither one of them has had a chance to brush their teeth? They both probably have terrible morning breath

Sigh, I think the mystery of why she refused to marry was what was holding my attention. Now that I know, it's becoming a bit of a slog...

Ahh the obligatory call back to the last book. The Morelands feel a bit like a zanier set of Bridgertons

Dr. Felton "asked her if she cared to take a stroll around the room." Candace Camp, what are you playing at? If she thinks these are subtle jokes she is SORELY mistaken.

OK, there's no way Camp isn't riffing on Austen. No romance author innocently names an obnoxious mother Mrs. Bennett

Nenia ✨ I yeet my books back and forth ✨ wrote: "I know! It's so gothic adjacent. I'm really into it."Lol Gothic adjacent, I like that. I feel like the only reason it's not fitting in the gothic box is that its not a straight gender swap. Anna is tormented, but she's not brooding or dangerous. Certainly no byronic heroine or femme fatale. And Reed is a little bit of a boy scout, but he's not naive, and he's not being sucked into the mystery, he's actively seeking it out. He has too much agency to be a classic gothic lead lol

Yes! There's also not quite enough dread in the air either although I like the creepy statues.
