Yes! You hit a spot in this book and it just turns upside down. My high school English teacher gave me this book to read one summer and she had removed the cover and all front pages so it was just the beginning, she said, just read this one blind to what it is...by like page 100 or so I was sucked in

SPOILERS: I had NO idea what to expect. It’s the Feb pick for the Literary Fiction By People of Color group. They are always good so I just press play and wade in.
I really cannot emphasize how much I wanted things to go well for Bigger. I kept holding my breath and hoping his choices would improve. (Meaning his very limited opportunities as well as his decisions). I felt relief every time he dodged a bullet. Finally! Then he crossed that line and no! Dammit Bigger.
So here I am.

Yeah, it is a fascinating book and really shows how lack of education really shapes decision making skills...that and fear. It's one of the best books for illustrating the state the African American communities were in back then (maybe still are to some degree in some areas)
Im reading this a the BOTM in Literary Fiction By People of Color group in Goodreads. I look forward to hearing the insights of group members. It’s a tremendously insightful group, thoughtful, and well moderated. There are good discussions. I normally only ‘listen’. The BOTM selections have all been solid.
