The first 250 pages or so gradually reveal Katerina's traumatic wartime experience. Once Katerina has unburdened her traumatic past to David, who has surreptitiously manipulated her, he is eventually caught out but manages to keep enough trust to follow her to London. Here the story becomes more of a manhunt for a missing psychopath, with the Pearls the only link to any clues.
