I had previously read this as a high school sophomore and found it extremely depressing. I was curious to see if I would still find it depressing reading again at nearly 60 years of age. Today, I have a different experience reading it. I thought it tragic instead of depressing. So many small actions would have changed the trajectory of Tess's life.
