“[…] you must loathe the world. When you loathe this world, you will busy yourself with love of the next world. And you will abstain from this world in proportion to your love for the next world. And in proportion to this, you will see that which benefits you. When God knows of a servant's total commitment, He frees the barriers for him and surrounds him with protection.”

“If the scholar sees […] an unbeliever, he should say, 'What do I know? Perhaps he will die in a state of Islam and I will die as he is right now. There is no guarantee that my guidance will continue, just as there was no guarantee that it would begin for me.'

Thus, by having regard for the end, the scholar will be able to extinguish the pride in himself.“

“Pride, esteem, magnificence and loftiness only befit the King, the All-Powerful.

As for the owned slave, who is weak and incapable, he who has no power over anything, how can pride befit him? Whenever the servant acts proudly, he is contending with God (Exalted is He) for a quality that is only befitting of His Majesty.“

“[…] What elevates a believer most in the eyes of God is what is most humiliating for his ego (nafs), and that what humiliates a believer most in the eyes of God is what most elevates his ego.”
