Liked the bit about pacifists and warriors. How Christianity is big enough for both. How it is the wild inclusion of many different dogmas that is the great miracle of the Church. Paganism makes everyone the same. In Christianity, everyone can be different because they are united by a single frame.
In the Roman Empire, all have to be Roman. In Christendom, a Frenchman can be French and a German can be German.

Something new hit me! The image of the church as lion tamer, bringing to heel various dangers ideas. Also of Orthodoxy as a wild balancing act, with fiery or dark pits of heresy to either side. Not somrthing old and boring, but a dangerous adventure.

Ethics of Elfland is the first great chapter of this book. Love his idea that you should see a mountain, or the stars, and be grateful that they survived the Fall from Eden.
All the good things in the world are relics of Eden, and we should be happy that any were saved at all. It could have been worse. There could be no mountains on earth. Or no sea. And then it would be a duller place.

I think it's an important book. At least it was important for my development as a Christian. So I am rereading it.
