I am only two chapters into this book so far and my heart is already shattering.

“2.) Don't try to hide the facts by making pretexts this and that; you strictly prohibited to contest me.” — Yet people were executed for remembering “facts” about Cambodia before Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge were in power. The Khmer Rouge’s “facts” were not truthful. They were under false pretenses within themselves.

A gentle and sweet child during his years of development, Duch was known for the kindness he showed to his peers and the hardworking attitude he carried with him through each day. How he came to be such a monster is unknown and unbelievable in my mind. To kill the man who helped you advance in life and act as though you did not follow the same beliefs as the man in question is such an unimaginable tragedy.
