I asked Vinyë Lambengolmor (a group of people really into Tolkien's Elvish languages) to translate Turgon's "great is the fall of Gondolin" line into both Quenya and Sindarin, and this is what they gave me:
Quenya: "Melehta ná atalantë Ondolindëo!"
Sindarin: "Beleg i-dhant Gondolin!"

I'm always taken ABACK at the abrupt ending to the final version of the story. Like... why couldn't Tolkien give us a fresh detailed description of the city before he abandoned it??! *sobs*

'Nor might they persuade [Idril] from bearing a sword.'
So Idril DOES have a sword during the Fall of Gondolin, which means that Hadhafang is CANON. Hadhafang is the sword Arwen wields during the FOTR movie, and this is what is said about it:
'Hadhafang once belonged to the Elven lady Idril, who wed Tuor, a Man, and bore Eärendil, the father of Elrond.'
And this is supported by the Fall of Gondolin itself!
