And on those days, while I enjoyed spending them prepping vegetables and being with her and the other neighborhood aunties... she could never forget that we weren't like other families. But then she reminded me that we had each other. And that meant I did belong somewhere.

I began trying to recreate the side dishes Halmoni loved. Renting VHS video tapes of Korean shows to feel like I was back in Halmoni's living room. And then watching and rewatching them. Listening to music from our childhood whenever we felt like hearing a familiar voice.
