I feel satisfied that some long-standing murkiness I’ve had about origins of English are cleared up. I’ve known that English is a Germanic language, and had some idea of this being through Anglo-Saxon influence, the anglos and Saxons being various Germanic tribes. Now I feel cleared up that these tribes come from modern day Denmark. MOST IMPORTANT DISCOVERY HOWVERE = celts, Romans, anglosaxons. in that order

Influence of Latin on English still murky ! Did it come through the Anglo-Saxon invasion in Britain, or before them with the half millennium of Roman occupation in Britain? Probably a bit of both, but what’s important is that Latin had less of a stronghold in Britain than it did in continental Europe… Chrystal refers to the idea that this could be the first time of anglosaxon monolingual mentality… interesting!
