I can see the History degree and teaching experience come out for Chalker in this story. He crafts four characters with distinct and realistic personalities and the clashes that occur come across very real for it.
I would have liked if the hypothesis Harry describes for why the chambers exist and the reveal in the end were a little different.

WOW! I liked the Twilight Zone feel to the story and the Introduction was a useful step in understanding the overall story.
Some of the little details that come forward in filling out the variations would place this story into Alternate History for me.
I enjoyed this as much as the previous story but in a different way.

I did not expect that kind of twist in the end. I sensed a build up to some barb or sting in the tale but I thought it would all come from the alien.
This may be my favorite of the book, certainly thus far.
