I have to say this one still reads like a Carr, but the writing style is a bit different. The notorious ellipses and passive dialogue aren't nearly as pervasive. Wondering if she had help from a ghost writer as she aged. I did have a friend who ghostwrote books for a while for well known authors (an NDA prevented saying who) and she said such ghostwriting is done for more established authors than one would think.

I swear to God these people are the worst spy catchers I have ever seen. Also, I refuse to believe Joel would still be entrusted with these state secrets at this point with his obvious inability to secure them properly. Good god

Girl let him go. You don't need any man in your life who won't fight to be with you.

World War I is here. The book is def missing something compared to the other Carr wartime books, but I like it. I would give it about 3 stars so far. Lucinda is such a good girl and she can be a little boring. However, Annabelinda the "bad girl" gets on my nerves. Shut the f up already. And I think maybe Andrée is supposed to be a spy.

I wasn't sure about this one at first. But while it doubtless won't be the most exciting it should beat the last few for adventure. It started with a delightful boarding school setting, an obvious scandal, and now the start of World War I sending everyone fleeing. I do think it's boring having so many good girl narrators in a row, though. We need at least one more siren MC like Carlotta or Bersaba before series' end!

It's so interesting to me how there's almost no indication anywhere on these paperbacks that the first 19 Carr books form a series or are even related. Maybe Hibbert did not want her Carr books to officially be a series since they can mostly stand alone, and what you miss that's important, someone will usually explain. I've seen other authors (and moviemakers too) not want their stories labeled as a series.
