I’ve read a lot of Harrison’s work over the years and, other than a few shorts (like the excellent “Egnaro”), I’ve never really connected with any of it. Something keeps drawing me back, though, and I’m glad I never gave up because this is pretty damn brilliant so far. I’m not sure if it’s really better than his other novels I’ve read, or if his dense, poetic prose just finally clicked with me after all these years.

Personally, this was the standout of the Viriconium sequence by a long chalk (and possibly MJH's oeuvre too); the language and imagination on display rivals that of a Schulz or a Ligotti.

Ligotti definitely came to mind when I got to this line: “Procreation is a blasphemy, for it replicates and fosters the human view of the universe.” (page 30 of the Pocket mass-market). Based on the first 40-some pages, I went ahead and ordered The Floating Gods (In Viriconium). Then I went ahead and ordered Signs of Life as well, which I see you enjoyed.
