Jo Baker has this talent of writing a character that comes alive just in a few strokes that has a distinct voice and personality. Page 170 and we had so much already. I don't encounter this often. And she's criminally undervalued.

It was gradual, the fade-out from beauty. It wasn’t any particular thing, no hard line, no threshold from one state to the next. But gradually the men stopped staring; and they stopped being angry at her, because they’d stopped wanting her. And she finds that she prefers it like this. To go unnoticed, unremarked upon. She’s enjoying her anonymity.

Jonathan O'Neill Interesting. *Begins rapid google deep-dive on author*

nastya It's a 4-generation family story written in ~ 350 pages and it somehow works, and it's never stale. And yet never rushed imo. We've been already through 2 world wars and a lot of things and it's like page 170 and somehow it works! I don't know how!

Jonathan O'Neill YES! I think my appreciation for efficient storytelling has increased exponentially over the last few years! I refuse to believe books need to be 1000 pages to make their point! 😁

nastya But then you need a talent and very good skills not to waste any page, to choose what's important and yet so that the whole story does not feel rushed! And please don't tell the snobs but I'm so in awe of the good storytelling! I know, I know, it's not fashionable, it's so pedestrian and banal, everything needs to be meta and postmodern and about writer's thoughts gazing at their navels.
But I know you understand considering the series you've been rereading lately :)

Nataliya Curious. That’s the Longbourn author, right?

Yes! And also I'm only at 50% so 🤞 the book doesn't fall apart!
