Carver has a great talent for minimalism bringing so much texture to the mundane, but I just have a hard time understanding some men's views on love as inevitably painful and easily corrupted into loathing, and violence as equally inevitable and almost fundamental to love. I don't know if I learned anything about love expect that I'm scared of the farce some people mistake for it.
