"...radar became one of the most important tools of weather forecasters...just in time, because hurricanes went on a rampage during the 1940s and '50s. In those two decades, twenty-one major hurricanes...and twenty-three lesser ones hit the U.S. mainland alone." Holy Jesus....

I haven't spent much time reading about Hurricane Andrew. I got chills while reading the experiences of the scientists and the public. I can't imagine what it would be like to experience anything like what they did.

I think cloudseeding is dangerous in terms of global politics. Hurricanes naturally help with water transport and changing the direction of these storms can drastically reduce water transport to certain areas leaving them in drought and damaging agriculture. I can totes see other countries blaming cloud-seeding countries for this.

HAHAHAHAHA omg. "...there was the fellow who suggested having a fleet of propeller-driven aircraft - all such aircraft owned by all the nation's and corporations of the world, apparently - fly in a clockwise direction through a hurricane in order to blow against the counterclockwise winds and thereby 'unwind' the storm."

The use of satellites in the 60s was incredible for studying hurricanes. It confirmed the notion that many hurricanes began as disturbances in African and moved westward with the trade winds where they slowly gained energy and grew into hurricanes.

"To this day, hurricanes, typhoons, and tropical cyclones remain the only weather events or natural disasters that are given names upon conception." This is still true today - the Weather Channel is on their own with the winter storm naming, it's still not really accepted in the meteorological community.
