The choice to tell most of the first third of this story from Fern's normie best friend's perspective is a bold one, but I'm into it. Fern is so closed off from her Gift, and therefore herself, that not even the reader is allowed in that head of hers.

There's a massive time jump between book 1 and 2, in which our main character goes from an overly serious 16-year-old to a coldly efficient 28. It was a choice I found jarring as a teen but am enjoying quite a lot at 36.

The late 90's/early 00's society moments continue to be a real trip.
