The peculiar experience of reading my own words as something someone else had written caused me much pain. I seemed to be involved in endless rivalry with him. I stopped using the word “I.” I’m sure you understand: you can imagine how meaningless it seemed to write “I” after having had this rather unpleasant experience. For me, “I” had now also become “he.”

We are all too familiar with the way of reading that reads the empty spaces and the words between the lines. That is almost as generally accepted as the way of reading in which the reader identifies with the characters in the story and with the narrator. It is even sometimes given the title “criticism.”
