Finally getting into this strange story of rumor, hearsay, appearances . . . The vague and unreliable narrator drove me nuts at first. After 200 pages, someone finally hit someone else in the face . . . Listening to it on Librivox has helped me navigate the 20 syllable Russian names. The strange atmosphere of the story reminds me of Nathaniel Hawthorne's short stories like "Young Goodman Brown."
