This is an interesting but really long book. The historical portions are informative enough to keep me marching along through the Russian winter. The cast of characters is so vast that I somewhat struggle to keep the family trees, the status of their estates, their level of social influence, and their hearts desires sorted. The philosophical and editorial point of view are advanced for the period.
