I think Will will become a ranger's apprentice because none of the other specialty masters want him. He and his orphan friends reach age 13, the age they need to be to become a soldier, cook, diplomat, ranger, or scribe. Will's friends get chosen very quickly. When he does not get chosen, he feels left out and depressed. The only specialty master that didn't choose anyone, was the ranger.
