this is cuuuteee! i actually like that this is written in the present but about the past depending on the timelines. so like a retelling. i always thought that it was from emma’s past pov but i then found out it switches back and forth which i find pretty interesting. it’s almost like as if she grows up according to what she’s talking about and what her thoughts are when she’s looking back at her actions

awhh not the feeling of comparing yourself to your own sibling and thinking that they’re better than you :(( the insecurities?! also the feeling of not being fully accepted or validated by your own family whaaattt, that’s so sad 😔 okay but the emotions of having a crush rn??? it’s so cute, it’s like i’m living in this book and also having a crush!! 🥰

i don’t know if it’s just me or it’s really meant to be written like that, but she sounds mature and older when she wants to reminisce or criticise her decisions, and then like a teenager she was and a little immature when she’s experiencing those events. so it’s pretty cool because she’s telling her life as who she is (her current age) but in a younger pov — her young self — or the age she went through those moments. omg why is it kinda hard to explain this? but i think i made sense and i’ve gotten to the point. so i can definitely see the difference in maturity and the way it’s being written and told..because 14yo (wait what was her age in that part again?) emma’s story is written pretty kiddishly but as she grows up the writing also develops so uh yay i’m happy about that! i was scared that the writing was gonna stay that way as it sounded so different from tshoeh, so i was like uh the same author wrote this? but then i know what her intentions are so i appreciate that.. but now that i think about it’s normal for writers to do that so idk what i’m talking about 😭😭 maybe i was just relieved because i was genuinely worried the writing would stay that simple kiddish way LOL and i didn’t sign up to read an anticipated book from THE taylor jenkins reid for it to be written that way..

no actually nah not a lot of writers do this i think? wait no i don’t even know because i haven’t even been reading a lot of books. a lot of the books with past & present revolve only around on the mc’s specific age according to what timeline they’re in, that’s why the story is told in that particular way be it kid, adult or not. this book on the other hand is written in different parts to different timelines, but from the mc’s present age. she’s writing it while putting herself back in the shoes of her past selves. whoa whoa there. why have i gone full on analysing the style of this book’s writing????
ANYWAY the most important part of this review is that jesse and emma are so cute!!! their uh sudden fast confession??? super high schooly rolling in bed giggling cuts. like bros just developed a major crush on each other after 1h30min of meeting? well on jesse’s part i mean. emma had been crushing on him for god knows how long 😭 well she claimed to be over him for years already but then i’m pretty sure the default crush stayed in her heart deep down inside. if not why’d she suddenly like him again too? the emotions just came rushing back. that feeling of that one particular person 😏 i see you emma. ugh but it was just too cute like they were lowkey confessing what they feel to each other in a POLICE STATION waiting to get bailed and being playful..? the underlying intentions of the things that jesse said? that got me fluttering in my feet anyway they’re cute but sam oh noo but well jesse x emma first!!
