“The Present Situation and the Tasks Before Us”, Deng’s speech to cadres in Jan 1980, is perhaps the best single things from Deng to read. I think it’s his longest speech/“work” in this book, and manages to effectively sum up all his ideas convincingly. It was published as a pamphlet in China, indicating that the party also agreed on this. An essential text on party building and socialist construction.
