I guess the author apparently decided that his characters weren't mature enough for a relationship so instead of showing us their development, he skipped to two years later (in the middle of the story, not an epilogue) and told us in a couple of paragraphs what had happened in the meantime. I can sort of understand why they didn't get together immediately, but I wish the author would have taken the time to actually show the time passing.
