Tara was trying to get used to college and life outside of her family. She was going to church with her roomates and one of them talked to the girls behind them. When one of the girls invited her to a movie "[She] shook [her] head" because she didn't watch movies on Sunday. This shows how the rules of her father impacted her even though she was feeling alone while at BYU.

In this section of the reading, Tara went on a visit to Rome with her classmates. As she was in Rome, "[she] experienced Rome as [the others] did: as a place of history" and "life" (268). While Tara was on this trip, she was beginning to fit in more with the "outsiders" as her dad would say. She later explained how she was able to connect with the past easier than the rest of the world, and so I wonder why this is.
