there's an ambiguity with the way atticus objects robert ewell. of course his wit and calm composure overshadows the minimal evidence he has over a left-handed Ewell. yet he seems to make it work. maybe lawyers are tricksters sometimes, and with jem counting chickens on the balcony lines we can foreshadow a foreboding despair. atticus is still atticus win or lose.
