incredible as an audio experience— two RICH worlds/times with characters that breathe in poetry and sharp reality all at once. already it feels as if I have been through so many stories and lives. this is what I love in literature, an epic, the legacy of family lines.

I got the most excellent vibes from it when I saw it in a bookshop a few years ago and have basically just been on the lookout for it ever since. I'm listening to the audiobook of it now (on spotify) which is adding so much to the storytelling but the prose and the story and characters etc are 100% worth engaging with in any sort of way. I really want to buy the physical book now as well to have for future reference. It feels a bit like an amalgamation of a lot of African American literature and themes. A 19th century historical plot, a 1980s coming of age plot with the emphasis on the female line of a family. Girlhood, race, colourism, class and the invention of these ideas. Intergenerational family conflict, the bond between siblings, family secrets, generational trauma and the repetition of patterns throughout time, stories and dreams and legacies. I feel so wild saying all of this when there's so much of the book left but it is truly hitting all of the marks and covering so many things
