In the first few chapters of this book we meet Ana, a young girl who 's father was lost at sea and lives in Finisterre, Spain, where an American man washed up and continued to live until he went missing. After he disappears, Ana goes to his house where the housekeeper allows her to take a box of letters that the man had written to his granddaughter. "At the end of the world there is a port called Finisterre."

In the last letter Martel writes to his granddaughter discovers misconseptions he has about life and faults in the stories of his family history. After the shock of his best friend's death, he learns that the stories he was told about his origins may not have been true and he feels like he does not know who he is anymore. "My whole life story would need to be rebuilt..."(Manlinowski 84).

As Ana reads the letters that Martel wrote to his granddaughter, Kit, she learns about his family history and his experiences aboard "The Packet", along with his childhood memories.
