“But now I much more pity him that rejoiceth in his wickedness, than him who is thought to suffer hardship by missing some pernicious pleasure”

Our perspective cannot be the world’s perspective. It’s better to be “suffering” by missing out on a sin of this world than to be living “the good life” and taking part in the world’s sin.

“[he was] teaching salvation most soundly. But salvation is far from sinners, such as I then stood before him; and yet was I drawing nearer little by little, and unconsciously.”

He’s telling the story of his conversion and he just started working for the man who would later lead him to faith. Such a beautiful picture of the early stages of the evangelism process!

“It was foul, and I loved it; I loved to perish, I loved mine own fault, not that for which I was faulty, but my fault itself.”

He’s talking about how he loved to steal as a teenager, not loving what he stole but loving the theft itself. That’s a really powerful description of who we are in our sin. We love the sin itself.

Our staff book for this semester had a long list of classics to read that were really formative for the author. This was top of the list.

“Yet suffer me to speak unto Thy mercy, me, dust and ashes.”

“Nor let me faint in confessing unto Thee all Thu mercies, whereby Thou hast drawn me out of all my most evil ways, that Thou mightiest become a delight to me above all the allurements which I once pursued.”
