Good blend of personal and practical. I’m sad that her family had to experience unreal church expectations (the Intro story about her playing Nancy Drew in the janitor closet is a good enough reason to buy this book). I’m sad she experienced the same burnout as many others, and yes it’s preventable. Why on earth there isn’t more emphasis on church planting instead of megachurch growth strategies- no idea.

The section “Old-School Church Politics” is pure gold. I can see the newbie pastor presenting ideas, then dismissed with “that’s not the way we’ve done it”. Pastors are expected to lead, and then everyone acts like the Israelites with Moses: cry about the past, criticize the present, and shout that he’s not doing enough about their future. And try to get him to change nothing.
