I often disagree with Tito Maning, because he is so acknowledging of his son's death. When Jun is planning his trip to the Philipines, he has to "promise not to bring up" Jun, Tito Maning also declines Jun's right to have a memorial service, I could understand how due to him being a police chief it might damage his reputation if people find out how Jun died, and the grief is too much to process.

Why does the author include Jay's struggle to find a place that he belongs? Throughout the book, Jay struggles with his identity like when he feels "a flush of shame" wash over him when he cannot speak Tagalog (Ribay 192).
