I'm skipping Prince Alberic and the Snake Lady by Vernon Lee despite the fact that it seems to be about a magical (cursed?) tapestry, and I am on record as loving magical fiber art stories. It's my first DNF of this collection, I just can't get into it.

Speaking of magical fiber art stories, Susanna Clarke gives us two in The Laries Of Grace Adieu, which is maybe a perfect anthology.

I'm a simple woman -- to me, if it's in space, it's sci-fi.

Strong stories in this section:
"The Little Room" by Madeleine Yale Wynne
"The Plattner Story" by H.G. Wells
" The Princess Baladina - Her Adventure" by Willa Cather
"The Reluctant Dragon" by Kenneth Grahame
"Iktomi Tales" by Zitkala-Ša.

"The Little Room" is my favorite here (might as well have been written to pander to my interests), but I love that Baladina is an awful child that doesn't learn anything.

"The Remarkable Rocket" Oscar Wilde
"The Ensouled Violin" H.P. Blavatskaya
"The Death of Odjigh" and "The Terrestrial Fire" Marcel Schwob

Filing "The Ensouled Violin" under stories that make you ask big questions, like "why would someone write this?"

"Furnica, or Queen of the Ants" by Carmen Sylva
"The Story of Iván the Fool" by Leo Tolstoy
"The Goophered Grapevine" by Charles W. Chestnutt
"The Bee-Man of Orn" by Frank R. Stockton

The Tolstoy story was funny, but "The Queen of the Ants" was exactly my sort of thing. Going on my list of fairytales to tell kids to freak them out.

Goblin Market (Christina Rosetti)
The Will-o'-the-Wisps Are in Town (Hans Christian Andersen)
The Legend of the Pale Maiden (Aleksis Kivi)
Looking Glass House (Lewis Carroll)

I don't think Alice is a very responsible cat owner.

Tartarus of Maids by Herman Melville - lots of metaphors about the harms of industry
The Magic Mirror by George MacDonald - a guy falls in love with an unavailable woman (she's stuck in a mirror)
The Diamond Lens by Fitz-James O'Brien - a guy falls in love with an unavailable woman (she's microscopic)

"Mister Zacharius" by Jules Verne.
If instead of creating a person, Victor Frankenstein gets a god complex over making nice watches and almost sells his daughter to the devil (?) over it.
