I first got to know Henrik Ibsen through AS Byatt's The Biographer's Tale, where he is one of the subjects of her fictitious biographer, Scholes Destry-Scholes. Later, in a conversation with Afrikaans poet Lina Spies, she referred to A Doll's House (we discussed the storm that erupted after Hilary Mantel's remarks about princess Kate) and I just knew I had to read this play as much as A Room of One's Own!
