How is this story sci-fi exactly? This was pure fantasy novel. Why is it among SF Masterworks?

The walls between Sci-Fi and Fantasy are often paper-thin in terms of book classifications (e.g. you'll also tend to find all Stephen King and other horror bleeding into the fantasy sections in bookshops. I think sometimes SF is used to stand for 'Sci-Fantasy' as a coverall.

In this case I think it's due to the series starting in our (then contemporary) world so that gives it a definite link between us and the world beyond and I seem to recall by the end of the 5 books there is more of a sense of existing in the universe than in a universe all its own.
