Academics who've studied Rogers's work often marvel at how young children calm down, pay attention, and learn so much from this television production-- and how they remain calm and centered for some time after. ...Rogers himself put great care into the pacing of the program to help children slow down and steady themselves.

Television appalled and attracted him at the same time. He understood the extraordinary power of the medium, even as others saw it as merely a diversion or minor entertainment. And he also understood its potential for education, perhaps more fully than anyone else at the time. But even though he had the foresight to see its potential, he was also sickened by the crass, low grade humor of the television he saw.
